our daily bread

mr. pike and i received a wheat grinder for christmas. some may wonder - is this something that was really on your wish list?

well, yes - yes, it was. after buying two big buckets of wheat last summer -- 25 pounds each -- it seemed like the next logical step in becoming a little more self reliant. so, now we have a wheat grinder. so, now i'm trying my hand at making bread using freshly ground wheat flour.

homemade bread can taste so delicious. and while i think of myself as a good cook, i'm not the world's best baker. some of my bread attempts in the past have only gotten me an "A" for effort, but failed in the most important category -- taste. one loaf never really rose. rolls that i let rise too long. bread that turned out dry.

so, i took another shot at it yesterday. and both mr. pike and i were happier with the results. (which is a good thing, since the recipe made three loaves!) i guess practice does make things better. (i don't think i'm at perfect just yet.)
