advent calendars

even though we had an extra week this year between thanksgiving and december 1, the month still snuck up on me.  initially, i was planning on just buying 99-cent advent calendars at trader joe's, until my sister sent me a link to oh happy day.

jordan's been collecting and posting advent calendar ideas, and her posts inspired me to do a little more than chocolate for the kids.  i especially loved her idea about doing something special each day during the christmas season.

it is so true that december can slip away so quickly and before you know it, christmas is here and gone.  there are always so many memories i want to make with my family, but many of them end up slipping through the cracks.  and this year, i'm trying to be a little more deliberate in how we celebrate.

i didn't have time last week to make anything cute, so our advent calendar comes each morning in a small box with a red ribbon.  i write out an event or activity the kids will get to do, and include a little treat or prize.

some things we've done already include going to the christkindlmarket, watching the christmas devotional, seeing the winter wonderland lights display, watching miracle on 34th street, sending christmas cards, and making cookies.  even little things like watching drinking hot chocolate and watching a year without a santa claus make the holidays more festive.

if you have a favorite holiday activity, will you share it with me?  i'm still filling out our month of celebrations and would love any ideas.

merry christmas!

For our seminary advent, we've done a lesson by candlelight (maybe you could do dinner by flashlight/candlelight?); decorate cookies; write letters to missionaries; sing the Hallelujah Chorus; kindereggs; an all bacon morning; watch the Grinch and Pres. Uchtdorf's talk about the Grinch. I told them that since I don't have kids, I have to try out all my advent ideas on them!
