without wheels

you've heard that joke - "what time is it?" (and the rip roaring reply - "time for a new watch.")

well, mr. pike and i have moved from watches to cars. and the big question for us is when to buy.

it's not that we don't love our purple '98 dodge stratus. money's zoom - as it is affectionately called by some - has been a good little transporter. she's been zooming for more than 140k miles. and that's a lot for a dodge.

but, it's very apparent that this little car does not like midwest winters. and i don't really blame her. i mean last week it was below zero. (colder here than in alaska!) then there's the snow. so, the little car has been chugging along - but a couple times has refused to start.

and of course when the little car is at the mechanics, she is on her best behavior. so, we are not so sure what her problem is. but our problem is this inconsistent performance record. midwest winters, pregnant lady, troubled car - doesn't make for the friendliest of combinations.

so, we're on our third mechanic today. without wheels - temporarily. waiting anxiously for a diagnosis.

One of the benefits of living in NYC is that we can get along quite well without wheels -- in fact, I think it's easier to live here without a car. Before we moved here from Indiana, we sold our little Corolla, which was one of the hardest things I've ever had to do. But you know, it's nice to not have to worry about maintenance -- especially in sub-zero winters (midwest winters are hard!) So I guess what I'm saying is this: Good luck getting your car repaired/buying a new one, and if it doesn't work out, NYC is a unique option. :)
