an unexpected lunch guest

miss anderson and i were enjoying lunch at a cafe chain in downtown chicago last week. we both had chosen delicious sandwiches on flatbread -- hers: chicken with fresh mozzarella and tomato, mine: roast beef with pickled ginger -- and a bag of kettle chips.

it was a beautiful day in the city, mid 70s. lunch tasted particularly good. and we people watched as we ate.

i had my legs crossed under the table, and my shoe dangled from my toes as it sometimes does. during a conversation, i felt something drop into my shoe. initially, i though maybe something had fallen off our table. so i removed the dangling shoe and flipped it over.

unexpectedly, it was not food but a bug. a cockroach to be exact. i shrieked a little shriek. and miss anderson swatted at it with her flipflop, flipping the little critter onto its back.

i really don't like bugs when they are indoors. and at this moment i was feeling a little numb about the situation, thinking about the little cockroach crawling around on the underside of the table while i sat there eating. yuck!

while i was regaining my wits, the two ladies sitting next to us had heard our commotion. one in particular said i should talk to the manager instantly or she would. i quickly said i would; i knew it was my problem. so i found the manager and informed him of the recent events.

because the cockroach was on his back, it hadn't moved from his flung spot. the manager removed the little bug. and the lady demanded that he refund the four of us our money, which he did.

this lady was a little more outspoken than both me and miss anderson usually are. we were glad that she was there to aid us in this misadventure. otherwise, we weren't sure what we would have done.

since then, i do feel a little more preoccupied with the security of our home. yesterday i vacuumed all the corners and windowsills for any possible intruders. and i made miss anderson go through my purse before she left to make sure nothing had made a home for itself there.

i really don't mind bugs when they live outdoors. that's their home. i try to respect them when in nature. i really wish they'd respect my home and not come by.

Oh my gosh, M, I would DIE. Roaches freak me out. If you're worried about your house, keep your cereal in plastic bins. They like cardboard and food in cardboard boxes. Most apartment complexes will spray each month if you tell them to, or you can get an inexpensive monthly service on your own if you're in a house. I know all of this because I am super paranoid and was not about to live in Texas ill-prepared for those darned nasty creatures. Never had a problem, either!
