i heard a story on npr about how summer icebergs in the arctic are becoming smaller and farther a part. this is putting polar bears in jeopardy, because the bears use the icebergs as a resting place when hunting in deep waters.
after hearing the tragic plight of polar bears, i felt helpless. i wanted to make a huge iceberg in my freezer and airlift it to the arctic. if only that was really possible. stories like these remind me how fragile our environment is. and mr. pike and i are trying to be more environmentally conscious.
my sister, mrs. jones, gave us a book -- the green book -- and it gives great every day ways to be a little more green.
we've changed our light bulbs to the energy-efficient compact fluorescent light bulbs. i try to bring my own bags to the grocery store. and i changed our plastic shower liner to a cloth one.
every month or two i take it down and wash it. i just did laundry yesterday, and put the liner in the wash with a little bleach. it's now beautifully white -- like brand new. it made me feel good that i wasn't throwing away this huge moldy plastic sheet.
while all of these efforts are small on their own, i think every bit helps.

A cloth shower curtain liner? That's fantastic! Where did you get one? I get so tired of having to change our cheap-o plastic liners whenever they get moldy (not to mention that that's certainly not helping the environment). Anyway, I'm intrigued. Tell me more. :)

I truly appreciate your efforts in saving our environment in fact just the other day as I was changing the oil in our back lot/replenishing the Earth's oil supply, I thought to myself "self, I wonder how many do it yourself oil changes I will have to do before I save enough money to go that polar bear hunt?" Which lead me also to contemplate how many plastic items I will need to burn in our burn pile this winter to have global warming kick in at our job site in Island Park! Oh, Island Park...that reminds me, that coyote I shot yesterday had to have been twice the size of any coyote I have ever seen!! I wonder if anyone else has ever shot a black coyote? :)
Dan and I are trying to do our part as well. We have those cool new light bulbs and we have a recylcing box at our house for all of the paper. We have thought about riding the bus to work, but we aren't that dedicated yet!
Lindsay,
We got ours at Bed Bath and Beyond. It'll cost a little more than a regular shower curtain up front; however, it'll save you money in the long run!
I didn't know a cloth shower curtain liner existed. I do wash my plastic one in the washer with detergent and it lasts through a couple cycles. Good for you for upping your environmental awareness!
